October 19 & 20, 2022 Manila Philippines

“The private sector is the engine of growth.”

With these words, NEDA Secretary Arsenio Balisacan set the tone at the 48th Philippine Business Conference and Expo, held October 19–20, 2022, at The Manila Hotel. More than a thousand business leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders gathered—not just to exchange business cards, but to engage in a deeper, more urgent conversation: Where is our economy headed, and how do we get there together

The convergence of private sector ambition and public sector vision was both inspiring and telling. Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio opened the event, calling for cooperation and resilience in uncertain times. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. later outlined his administration’s economic strategies, assuring the business community of stability, support, and a shared direction.

The message throughout was clear: for the Philippines to achieve sustainable, inclusive, and resilient growth, the private sector must not only be involved—it must lead. But leadership requires an enabling environment. It is government’s responsibility not just to regulate, but to empower—by creating strong institutions, promoting innovation, and fostering enterprise.

Discussions during the two-day conference focused on expanding investments, growing SMEs, and generating jobs. Yet beneath these priorities lay deeper, long-term questions: Where do real opportunities lie under this administration? What threats do we need to prepare for? And how do we avoid tomorrow’s pitfalls by acting today

One of the highlights of the event was the recognition of the Most Business-Friendly Local Government Units and Outstanding Chambers of Commerce—a powerful reminder that real progress doesn’t begin in national capitals. It starts in cities and municipalities, where policy meets reality, and where businesses take bold risks.

Which brings us to Taytay, Rizal.

When the call rang out—SMILE, TAYTAY NA!—there was pride, purpose, and ambition. Under the leadership of Mayor Allan De Leon and the dynamic work of the Local Economic Development and Investment Promotion Office (LEDIPO), headed by Ms. Cristina “Chin” Gonzales, Taytay is charting a bold course. The goal is clear: to position Taytay as a frontrunner in local economic development and business friendliness.

This isn’t just about participation—it’s about competition. It’s about raising standards, attracting investment, and delivering real value to residents and entrepreneurs alike. And next year, Taytay isn’t just showing up. We’re going for the award.

As someone documenting this journey, I find the story compelling. Because the real narrative of national progress is written where ambition, good governance, and entrepreneurship intersect. That’s where change begins. That’s where the future is shaped.

And in Taytay, the momentum is real. The commitment is strong. And the promise? It’s just beginning.

Padayon tayo. The road ahead may be long, but we are moving—together, with vision, purpose, and the will to lead.
