Recent celebrity splits have Jana Kramer reflecting on her own past breakups.

“January is a divorce month, and I had to think back to my divorces. And I’m like, ‘I chose the wrong month. That was my problem all along,’” Kramer, 41, joked on the Monday, January 17, episode of her “Whine Down” podcast. “I don’t think I ever got divorced in January.”

January has earned the nickname “divorce month” due to the large amount of couples who decide to begin the new year by calling it quits. Several famous couples have continued to prove the trends’ legitimacy, with Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson and Jessica Alba and Cash Warren all announcing the end of their respective marriages earlier this month.

Kramer, for her part, tied the knot three times before marrying her husband, Allan Russell, in July 2024. She married her first husband, Michael Gambino, in 2004, later moving on with Johnathon Schaech in 2010. The pair finalized their divorce the following year and Kramer went on to tie the knot with Mike Caussin in 2015. The exes welcomed their kids Jolie, 8, and Jace, 6, before splitting in 2021. (Kramer shares her youngest child, son Roman, 14 months, with Russell, 44.)

Kramer’s podcast cohosts, Kathryn Vieira Woodard and Kristen Brust, noted that January has become “divorce month” because couples don’t want to spoil holiday celebrations with news of their splits. (A source exclusively told Us Weekly in November 2024 that Simpson, 44, and Johnson, 45, were spending the holidays with their kids despite living separately.)

Kramer, for her part, said the new year can also be a good time to have a “fresh start,” stating, “You just want to break it off then.”

Having been through public breakups herself, Kramer noted that she empathizes with couples such as Simpson and Johnson and Alba, 43, and Warren, 46. “Anytime I ever see a headline of someone breaking up, it’s just like, ‘No!’ Whether I’m connected to it or not, like, or I like them or not, it’s sad to see people not together and happy,” she shared. “Having said that, I want people to be happy. So, if the happiest route is to not be with a person, then I’m happy for them.”

The actress continued: “It’s hard, too, ‘cause people always say, ‘Oh, there was warning signs’, like, all the clues that they were headed for a split. And again, I think anyone can look at someone’s relationship and go like, ‘OK, the signs were there.’ … That’s just marriages having their ups and downs. That’s just what it is.”

Kramer even teased that she experienced “divorce month” firsthand with someone she knows. “I have someone that I was just chatting with, she just broke up with her fiancé and it’s like, you know, coming in and she’s just like bawling and we’re, you know, talking about it. And it’s like, I hate when people’s heart [break],” she explained. “But then I’m also so excited. Like I said, I’m so excited for people’s next chapters. … It wasn’t the person, and we don’t understand why and the puzzle pieces and all that, but we will know eventually.”

Jana Kramer’s Relationship History: Past Engagements, Divorces and More

Simpson announced that she and Johnson had ended their 10-year marriage on January 13. “There were trust issues caused by the breakdown of their marriage,” a source exclusively shared in the latest Us cover story. “She’s sad [about the split] but knows she had to make a tough decision.”

Meanwhile, news of Alba and Warren’s split broke on January 8, with sources later telling Us the pair “had many ups and downs” throughout their marriage and plan to file for divorce “soon.”

Alba broke her silence on the split in a January 16 Instagram post, writing, “I’ve been on a journey of self-realization and transformation for years – both as an individual and in partnership with Cash. I’m proud of how we’ve grown as a couple and in our marriage over the last 20 years and it’s now time for us to embark on a new chapter of growth and evolution as individuals.”
